WOODS CROSS — C.J. Corry ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns while Tyler Parson threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns as the Woods Cross Wildcats defeated Tooele 44-18 Friday night. The win, combined with Bountiful’s lost to Highland, has put the ‘Cats in a situation where they could share the Region 6 title if they beat Highland on Friday.

“We have to clean up a few things first,” said Woods Cross coach Fred Fernandes. “We did a lot of things well but played poorly in other areas.

“We have to clean up the mistakes, but we’ll be ready.”

The first half was an offensive explosion for Woods Cross. Starting from its own 20, they quickly marched 80 yards in just five plays for the first score of the game. Parson completed all three of his attempts for 75 yards, including a 12-yard screen pass to Corry for the touchdown.

The ‘Cats scored faster in its second drive of the game, going 73 yards in just three plays. The quick strike was set up with Corry taking a 60 yard run inside the Buffalo’s 10-yard line, and finished with Parker Rose punching the ball in from four yards out.

Less than two minutes later, the ‘Cats recorded a safety when Tooele quarterback Braeden Torgensen was sacked by Mark Evans.

Before the half ended, Woods Cross had scored twice to take a 37-6 lead into the half.

In the second half, Tooele’s option offense was starting to get into a rhythm. In the Buffalo’s first possession they drove the ball 80 yards in eight plays, with Torgensen taking in the score from a yard out to cut the ‘Cats lead to 37-12. A bulk of the yards came on a 53-yard pass play that set up the Buffalo’s inside the five. They scored three plays later.

Tooele struck again in the beginning of the fourth quarter when Torgensen found Wade Heston for a 28-yard touchdown pass. Torgensen set up the score by taking the ball 28 yards before finding Heston on the next play.

But the Wildcats weren’t done scoring. With 8:15 to go in the fourth quarter, halfback Masen Fenn took the pitch from Parson, then stepped back and threw to a wide open Tanner Johnson for a 21-yard touchdown pass.

“We got beat in the second half,” said Fernandes. “They outscored us 12-7 and we made too many mental mistakes.

“I’m still glad we got the win, we just didn’t play well the second half.”

Woods Cross is now 4-1 in Region 6 heading into its final game of the regular season against Highland. A win gives the Wildcats a share of the title.
