Each year, the student body of Viewmont High School bands together to raise these funds. A group of students then visits Guadalupe Elementary School in Salt Lake City to give students there a Christmas. Last year, the school raised $34,000.
“There are a lot of people we can help with this project,” said VHS student body vice president Jared Vanhille.
Students began raising funds this year by Monday, Nov. 30. Activities that help get other students involved include a silent auction date night, a carnival night with marriage booths, divorce booths and dessert booths, as well as a day to kiss a pig.
“The students are amazing with this project, they work really hard to get those funds,” said student body advisor Breckon Heywood.
Of the funds raised, between $11,000 and $13,000 goes toward Guadalupe Elementary School, while the rest goes toward the Davis County Community Foundation. In the past, funds have also been donated to the Davis Education Foundation, the Children’s Care Center and other organizations.
“Financially, these families are in tough play,” said Vanhille about the students at Guadalupe Elementary School.
With the funds from Guadalupe Elementary School, students will go buy clothes, gloves, coats and toys for 106 children. At the end of the project, students go deliver the presents and hold a dinner for the students and their families.
“It’s amazing that within four weeks, we can raise over $25,000,” said Heywood.
The community is invited to participate and can write checks out to Viewmont High School for Guadalupe Elementary School or drop funds off at the school.
