The Viewmont Vikings jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first 5:32 of its game against Bountiful Tuesday night and never trailed, sending the Braves packing 49-41 in the yearly showdown of the two schools.
Blake Wilkinson scored the first five points for Viewmont and finished with 10 points to give the Vikings an early lead. Each time the Braves made a run at Viewmont, the Vikings responded, often times with Coulsen Wright’s long range shooting.
Wright picked up 16 points and three steals.
“Coulsen made some big perimeter shots in the second half to give us a big lift,” said Viewmont coach Jeff Emery. “Cole Jones and Eric North did a great job for us as steady influences out there.”
Jones was a beast inside forcing Bountiful into tough shots while North added a spark with 9 points.
For Bountiful coach Mike Maxwell, the game was summed up quickly.
“Two words…growing pains,” Maxwell said. “We’re still trying to figure out that we can win. We have to come out and play like we can win. We can’t use our youth as an excuse. We are who we are and we need to expect to win.”
The Braves have a lineup with no seniors.
Bountiful’s leading scorer was Nick Williams who finished with 11 points to go along with seven rebounds and two assists.
“We have fallen behind early in all of our losses. We fall behind and then we play pretty even,” Maxwell said. “We need to come out and hit things earlier.”
Emery noted the need for improvement on his side of the ledger as well.
“We have a lot of things we need to work on,” Emery said. “We need to be more disciplined and sharper on the offensive side of the ball. We’re still turning over the ball too much.
“But our guys did what they needed to do to get the win and I’m pleased with that. It’s always nice to get a win and learn things at the same time.”
For Maxwell, the growing process continues.
“We want to get ready for January when Region games begin,” he said.
Viewmont improved to 2-1 in non-Region play while the Braves drop to 1-2.
