“Right now, it’s not about the outcome of the game,” said Dart coach Jay Welk. “It’s about being a polished team.
“We did a lot of things well, but we also made some costly errors and came up short.”
The Darts were off to a slow start, scoring only four points in the first quarter while Bingham built a nine point lead. Landon Horne and Tallon Burton were the only Darts to score in the quarter.
Davis outscored Bingham in the second quarter by two points to cut their deficit to seven points at the half thanks to a string of early points to start the quarter. Trevor Webb and Morgan Dunford combined to score 12 of the team’s 19 points, including the final five points of the half.
“I probably should have started Morgan,” said Welk. “It was a better matchup against (Ben) Clifford because Morgan’s much taller and Ben is six (foot) nine.”
Davis was outscored again in the third quarter, but had largely maintained their deficit over the Miners. Davis had gone on a 10-5 run to cut Bingham’s lead to only two points with three minutes to go; however, Bingham went on an 11-3 run to close the quarter with a 10 point lead.
Davis mounted another comeback in the fourth quarter thanks in large part to their bench players. With four minutes to go in the quarter and down by 11 points, Webb and Horne combined to connect on three consecutive three point baskets to cut the lead to two points.
But the Miners again proved to be too much, as they turned five Davis turnovers into seven points and kept Davis from scoring another basket.
“Those turnovers really hurt us in the end,” said Welk. “But I’m proud of the way they played tonight. They never threw in the towel or gave up, they just kept fighting until the end.”
Webb led Davis in scoring with 18 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Dunford finished the game with 10 points and two rebounds. Horne finished with seven points and five rebounds in the loss.
