Thanks to the Davis Arts Council’s (DAC) 2010 Active Stages show, however, several Davis County students may just get that chance. The production, called “Shakesitement! Tired of being Bard?” features a touring group of Shakespearean actors who have half of their cast, sets and props break down on their way to the show. As a result, the remaining actors have to recruit audience members to fill in some of the missing players.
“It’s very fun, upbeat and crazy, while still getting in all the major educational points,” said Kirt Bateman, executive director of the Davis Arts Council. “It’s really all about bringing accessible Shakespeare to schools.”
Hoping to help with that is the Theatre Arts Conservatory, DAC’s partner in the Active Stages program. The group, which has won the Utah Shakespearean Festival’s student Shakespeare competition for the last five years, is currently in the process of creating the Active Stages Show.
“We were looking for something sort of literary, but weren’t able to find the right script, so they’re basically writing it themselves,” said Bateman. “I’m really looking forward to it.”
Though performances aren’t held until March, the DAC is currently accepting requests from schools who want to bring “Shakesitement!” to their school in 2010. Though they’d like to give all schools a chance to see the show (last year was the first time they made it down to a Bountiful school, a trip they’re hoping to expand this year) the touring schedule tends to fill up quickly.
“It’s first come, first serve,” said Bateman. Those who are interested in bringing the show to their school should send an e-mail to creative@davisarts.org or call the DAC at 801-546-8575.
