Reading Horizons announced a reading program to help individuals obtain literacy levels necessary for their jobs.

According to Reading Horizons, most jobs require a 10th-grade reading level, as do most job applications themselves. Reading Horizons also cited the National Institute for Literacy as saying that more than 20 percent of adults read at or below a fifth-grade level.

Reading Horizons listed several reasons literacy skills were important, including the need to increase basic writing and spelling skills to fill out applications and create resumes, as well as to read material associated with the job, the uncertain economy and more.

The program Reading Horizons uses can improve a reader’s skills by two to five grade levels. It also includes helping people with online resources for job hunting.

According to the statistics in this article its interesting to wonder if the unemployment rate is simply a result of the economy or if it would be lower if individuals had the skills necessary for applying and maintaining a job. Of course the economy plays a huge role, but illiteracy could also be the problem for many job seekers.
