KAYSVILLE — The now 5A Roy High Royals scored 35 points Friday night against the Davis Darts, just one more than Dart starters Tallon Burton and Landon Horne had…combined.

Burton had 18 points and seven rebounds while Horne scored 16 points with five rebounds as Davis made its dominance known again in Region 1 with a 71-35 victory.

The win puts them one game behind the Fremont Silver Wolves with yet another cycle of region games to follow.

“We were much better shooting the ball tonight,” said Dart coach Jay Welk. “And the defense was stellar, especially in the second quarter.”

Both teams were evenly matched in the first four minutes of the game, but got the upper hand early with an 11-3 lead before Roy called a time out. After the break, Roy went on a scoring tear themselves to pull to within four points.

The Royals never got that close again. Davis ended the period with an 8-2 run to close the quarter with an eight point lead.

The Darts’ defense stepped up in the second quarter, allowing the Royals to score only three points while ripping off 22 of their own. In the quarter, Burton and Horne scored the first nine points, while teammate Trevor Webb scored all eight of his points afterward. By the time Roy had scored its first points in the quarter, Davis’ lead had swelled to more than 20 points. Roy’s only other point came from the free throw line with less than a minute to go in the half. Davis went into the locker room with a 27-point lead.

“(Davis) came out with a lot of energy,” said Welk. “The defense was stellar, and the offense seemed like it couldn’t miss.”

The Darts extended their lead to 35 points after the third quarter was over, thanks mostly to Horne. Horne scored eight of the Darts’ 20 points while pulling down three rebounds and blocking a shot from under the basket. Blake Gardner scored all five of his game points in the quarter as the Darts cruised to another victory.

Reserve players Tommy Wilding, Riley Watts, Michael Kamalu and Troy Hinds scored all eight of the Darts’ points in the final quarter, with two points apiece.

“Any success in this (region) is good,” said Welk, “regardless of the opponent. He gave Roy credit for coming to Davis High and playing all 32 minutes.

“Our goal tonight was to take care of business at home, and we did that.”

Davis is now 9-2 overall, with a 5-1 Region 1 record. Roy falls to 0-11 in their inaugural season at the 5A level. Davis scored at least 20 points in the first three quarters of play and had 12 players score at least two points.
