Representing PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), demonstrators said they wanted to bring attention to the alleged plight of animals there.
The group filed a lawsuit early last week against Davis County, claiming inhumane treatment of animals, some of which were allegedly sold to the University of Utah Medical Center for experiments.
“The U kills Homeless Dogs and Cats” was one sign carried by demonstrators, while other signs called on the county and university to “Stop Testing Our Pets.”
Shelters “should be a safe haven for pets until they are reunited with their owners,” said protester Jeremy Beckham. “They should not be suppliers for the cruel animal experiments taking place at the university.”
He said further that “the county should stop supplying the animals and the university should stop experimenting.”
Beckham said the group plans to continue its protests until the programs they oppose are discontinued.
Chief Deputy Attorney Bill McGuire said Tuesday that he had talked to the attorney retained by PETA to file the suit late last week.
“We haven’t received it yet. We’re just waiting. We can’t do anything until then,” McGuire said. “We should see it within the next few days.”
The suit asks for documents regarding about 100 dogs and cats sold to the university last year.
