In the end, Viewmont blew by the competition, winning both the boys and girls titles. The girls were nearly 200 points better than the second place Weber Warriors. The boys also beat out the Warriors by nearly 100.
The Davis Darts also had a solid showing, finishing in third place on the boys’ side. The girls finished in fifth, but were just edged out by Syracuse for fourth.
The Viewmont girls had several events of near complete dominance. The 100 Butterfly for example, saw Cassie Brewer, Shelby Stubenrauch, and Crissy Johnson take first, second and third respectively, while Liz Miller was right there, finishing in fifth.
“We just have a lot of depth,” said assistant coach Scott Balling. “We have kids that work hard and compete well.”
On the boys’ side, Corban Bothell was one Viking who had a big day. The junior won the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. He also competed on two relay teams that placed in the top three.
On the girls side, Cassie Brewer came out a big winner. In addition to winning the 100 Butterfly, she was victorious in the 200 IM. Kristie Balling was also a big contributor. She won the 500 freestyle and came in second in the 200 freestyle. Jill Whiting came in second in the 100 breast and third in the 200 IM.
The medley teams all performed well. The Vikings often had teams that would have placed high, but because they were not the best on the team, they did not count.
“In addition to depth, we have a lot of balance,” said Balling. “We have a lot of seniors, but also a lot of freshman and others that contribute.”
For the Darts, Zach Santella won the boys’ 200 IM and the 100 breast, coming within a second of the region record on the IM. Alex Heder came in second in the boys’ 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. In both races, Heder came up just short to Weber’s Tyler Condie. Condie set region records in both events.
Heder and Santella teamed with Parker Simonsen and Spencer Hart to take second place in the 200 freestyle relay.
Simonsen took second in the 100 backstroke.
The girls side, team of Jennifer Estheimer, McKensie Page, Amanda Belliston, and Cami Hart took third in the 400 freestyle relay.
Now the teams will move on to the state competition, where they can hopefully improve as individuals and as teams and make a splash in the competition.
