Davis trailed Viewmont in the third quarter and the Vikings were clicking on all cylinders until Smith picked off a pass, attacked the basket, made the shot and was fouled — erupting the packed Davis gym.
Smith nailed the free throw, and Davis was back off the canvas.
“That play was huge for us,” said Davis coach Jay Welk. “We were still down, but we were back in it. Our fans were back in it, and I really think it turned the game around.”
After Smith cut the lead from 11 to nine, the Darts exploded for a 17-1 run. When Josh Van Weezep nailed a three-pointer, the Darts led 37-32 and the gym was rocking.
Now it was time for the Vikings to make their move.
Viewmont battled back, nursing a 40-37 lead with 20 ticks separating them from ending the Darts’ 30-game home win streak against Region 1 teams.
Free throws killed the Vikings as Davis climbed back into the game again, and it was Smith again ripping out the hearts of the Vikings as he connected on two free throws to tie the game at 41.
In overtime, Davis put things away with Trevor Webb’s three-pointer while Smith continued his dream night with an outside shot and lay up. In the end, Davis won, 51-47.
“Our guys were down, but they were certainly not going to give up,” Welk said. “They played with confidence, even when they were losing. They just expected something good to happen, and they have such confidence in one another that someone was going to step up and make the big play to turn the game around — and Smith did that for us.”
On the other side of elation was Viewmont’s coach Jeff Emery.
“We had this one, and we weren’t able to seal the deal,” he said. “We battled. The guys did a lot of good things tonight, and I’m proud of those things. We struggled at the foul line down the stretch.”
Welk praised the Vikings saying, “This is not the same Viewmont team we played earlier in the year. They are a very, very good team and we needed some big plays to pull it out.”
Smith led the Darts with 15 points, five rebounds and two steals. Van Weezep picked up 12 points to go along with five boards and two assists while Landon Horne remained a steady Dart with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
For Viewmont, Eric North was the leader with 10 points and nine rebounds. Senneth Fraughton also had 10, while Blake Wilkinson finished with eight points, six rebounds and two assists.
