The city’s public works department finished delivering a total of 3,000 cans early this week to residents who are participating in North Salt Lake’s curbside recycling program.
Though pick-up won’t begin until March 1, residents can start putting items in the cans as soon as they receive them (a list of items that can be recycled are available online at www.nslcity.org).
“We’ve been putting lids and wheels on these cans for a month,” said North Salt Lake Public Works Director Rod Wood with a laugh. “So we were really glad to get them out of here.”
The city’s 15-person public works department has been personally delivering the cans to city residents, checking the addresses against a master list. Though the department has commissioned occasional help from other city departments, they’ve been shouldering the bulk of the work on their own.
“I’m really proud of my people,” said Wood. “They do a great job.”
For participating households, the cost for North Salt Lake’s curbside recycling program is $3.75 per can. Wood points out that having a second garbage can costs $8 for city residents, and that participating in the recycling program often eliminates the need for the second can.
“I find that I don’t usually fill up my normal garbage can anymore,” said Wood, who lives in Bountiful and participates in their curbside recycling program. “With my recycling can, though, I regularly fill it up.”
Approximately 475 people opted out of the program last November, and a few more have requested to as well. Wood, however, believes that will drop off once residents get used to the program.
“It’s a good program,” said Wood. “I think that when people learn what they can and can’t put in the cans, they’ll be happy with it.”
