Sen. Jerry Stevenson, R-Layton, is sponsoring SB155 that would enhance the penalty for knowingly spreading HIV. “It would be for people such as female and male prostitutes who know they have HIV and continue to work,” said Stevenson. “It moves it from a misdemeanor to a third-degree felony.” Stevenson said the intent is to make the language clearer and to expedite prosecution.
Bond language to be clarified
After what became a confusing bond election in November, Rep. Sheryl Allen, R-Bountiful, is sponsoring HB321 to clarify the wording for future elections. According to Allen, many voters were confused by the wording of a school bond voters were asked to consider. She believed voters could have misinterpreted it to mean an increase in taxes. HB321 would clean up the language and provide more voter information.
Initiative signatures under scrutiny
Some heated debate took place on Capitol Hill Tuesday as representatives sparred over SB275 in the Senate.
Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, is sponsoring the bill that would give petition signers the ability to remove their signatures more easily.
Some Republicans implied that those gathering signatures for initiatives may use “subterfuge” and “deceit.” The ethics group, Utahns for Ethical Government (UEG), led by locals Kim Burningham and David Irvine, has been gathering signatures for an initiative that would go on the November ballot.
