THE WILDCATS celebrate their come-from-behind 6-5 win over Bountiful. It was Chip Thompson (right) who came up with the game winning RBI.
BOUNTIFUL — It’s the stuff you dream about if you’re an athlete. The things you play over in your mind as a fantasy, but then every now and then you get a chance to actually live it. And for Woods Cross senior Chip Thompson that moment was Tuesday afternoon.
With the bases loaded and his team knotted with arch rival Bountiful High, Thompson connected his bat with a pitch and then outran what looked to be an inning-ending double play to shove a dagger into the Braves, 6-5.
“This is great,” said Thompson. “To be able to get the hit and beat Bountiful for a season sweep as a senior is just great. They said they were going to come here and beat us and it is great, especially to come back.”
It looked as if Bountiful might very well come into Woods Cross and steal a win when the Braves scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead behind a Braden Franksen triple. Bountiful pushed the lead to 5-2 when Cam Zollinger scored on a passed ball in the fifth.
Woods Cross picked up two runs in the bottom of the fifth, and the score remained 5-3 until Woods Cross’ last at-bat.
Zac Johnson, who tore up the afternoon going 3-for-4, smacked an RBI double, scoring Aaron Markisich to tie the game at 5-5. After an intentional walk to Bosten Peters and Masen Fenn earned a walk, the bases were loaded for winning pitcher Austin Bankowski.
Bountiful dodged the first bullet when Bankowski’s dribbler was scooped up by BHS pitcher Franken who flipped it to catcher Steve Foster.
Then came up Thompson.
“Chip hasn’t been hitting great, but I knew he could get the job done in this situation,” said Woods Cross coach Paul Ayala. “He is a tough kid. He’s a smart ballplayer and knew what we needed, and he got it.”
The win keeps Woods Cross undefeated and in first place in Region 6.
Zac Johnson is the real story at WX. Hitting lead off and maintaining a .500 BA.. the kid could be a junior this year..but mom put him in school early..no one gives him any attention and he is a blue collar kid. comes to work and practice every day and works hard..
