This is supposed to be the year for another team to step up and knock off the Braves for the state championship, but if Friday’s game at Viewmont was any indication, the rest of the state may want to tread lightly and carry a big (very big) stick.
Bountiful scored early and often en route to a 15-0 whipping on the Vikings.
“We played well against a good physical Viewmont team,” said Bountiful assistant coach Brint Dietrich. “Viewmont plays hard, and even when we had the lead they kept attacking us.
“They are a real tough bunch.”
The Braves were led by Sam Young’s six-goal day. Jason Andre was credited with two goals and two assists.
Ty Forbes had two goals for the Braves, and Jonathan Yates picked up three goals and two assists.
Justin Walker and John Holmgren each had an assist.
“We have picked up the motto ‘defy’ all year,” Andre said. “So many people expect us to lose because we graduated so many great players last year.
“It’s nice to come out and show that we are still a very good team.
“Viewmont is extremely physical, and they play real hard,” Andre said. “It was a good win for us, especially since we all know each other.”
The Braves have a message for the rest of the state.
“We don’t mind being underdogs,” Andre said. “In fact, we kind of like it.
“We’re not going to give up the state championship without a fight.”
The state tournament began this week.
