AUSTIN TROTTIER slides up under Viewmont’s Larsen Brown during Friday’s game between the Darts and Vikings. The teams split two games last week and are getting ready for the state tournament.
DAVIS COUNTY — The Viewmont Vikings had a hit parade in the first of a two-game series with arch rival Davis last week.

The Vikings hammered Dart pitchers for seven runs in the first, and five in the second, winning 12-0.

“We hit the ball real well in that first game,” said Viewmont coach Roger Farnsworth. “Things really clicked.”

With the first eight Viewmont batters reaching base behind seven hits and ace Jordan Hager keeping Davis at bay, the Vikings steamrolled to their eighth consecutive Region 1 win.

Viking Garrett Bushman pushed his streak of consecutive hits to 11 in the game, but he was not alone.

Brad Payne helped put Viewmont up 3-0 with a two RBI single in the first.

Michael McBride lit up the cold afternoon with two hits and three RBIs.

On the mound, Hager remained undefeated as he chucked a two-hit game while striking out eight Darts in five innings.

“Jordan is a very good pitcher and has been doing this all season for us,” Farnsworth said.

Davis coach Dave Leo took the first game in stride.

“You know, in baseball you have days like this,” he said. “You go out and you want to win, you try to win and you know what, you get clobbered. Fortunately, in baseball there is always going to be another game.”

Two days later, the Darts exacted some revenge on their home field as Dart pitcher Jared Taylor handcuffed the potent Viking offense giving up just seven hits as Davis grinded out an impressive 7-4 win.

“I’m so proud of the way the guys bounced back two days later against a team that had just whooped them,” Leo said. “It would have been very easy for our guys to have come out and just not even tried.

“We had talked about Wednesday’s game and threw it away. We re-grouped and came out today and had a very good day.”

Davis showed patience at the plate as it scored four runs via a walk-filled fourth inning. After the Vikings put a run on the board in the top of the third, Davis came right back scoring two more runs in the bottom of the inning.

“I liked the way we responded after they got their run in the third,” Leo said. “There was no sense of panic. We just kept doing what we were doing.”

Davis also took advantage of four Viewmont errors, something that hurt the Vikings.

“It’s hard to win a game with four errors,” Farnsworth said.

Taylor was excited to have played such a big role in such a big win for Davis.

“I wasn’t really nervous,” Taylor said. “I was just excited to get out there and play.

“We wanted to show what kind of team we are, and we did that today.”

The biggest bright spot for Viewmont on a tough afternoon was pitcher Justin Rupe.

The junior tossed 3-2/3 innings, giving up two hits, no walks and one earned run.

Viewmont and Davis will battle to the end of the week.
