For that reason, and with an eye to saving tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars, the County Commission has approved a pared down list of primary polling places.
Voting places have been cut more than half, from 69 to 29, for the June 22 primary.
County Elections Director Pat Beckstead estimates the move will save about $40,000 – most of it in having to hire fewer polling workers and supplies.
“We will send out postcards to notify everyone of where they vote,” she said. “Some of our schools (normally used as polling stations) are experiencing construction (remodeling, expansion). There are a few we can’t get into.
“We still want to encourage people to vote on election day as well as in early voting or by mail,” Beckstead said.
Seventeen percent of registered voters took part in the 2006 primary, while only 7 percent cast ballots in the 2008 primary.
