LAYTON — Two public yard sales helped raise over $3,000 for Habitat for Humanity.

The Davis and Weber County-based chapter builds homes for local, low-income families in each county. This past yard sale was held at the former Foods Etc. store, with use of the former storefront offered for two years free of charge.

All funds collected at the recent yard sale went toward construction of a home in Ogden.

Cora Miller has four children. Cora, Natasha, Dylan, Bryer, and Devyn were selected as Habitat for Humanity’s partner family for the home in Ogden. Cora Miller is a single mom. She and her family have been living in a two-bedroom apartment in Layton. She has worked for a financial services company for many years.

The work being done on the current property will help another single-mother family currently living in Ogden. Elizabeth Guerero has two children, Jaylin and Joshua. The family is looking forward to being able to play in their own front yard once the home in Ogden is finished.

Habitat for Humanity is currently looking for new space to host a future yard sales event. The non-profit organization is also looking for any company willing to donate land for a new home. Ideally, the space should be 10,000 to 20,000 square feet. Anyone interested may contact Scott Christensen at 801-389-8867.

The program helps low-income families build and buy their own homes. Families must meet certain criteria and be willing to perform “sweat equity” to help build their own home, and the homes of others.

Once the homes are completed, they are sold to the family at a non-profit price with a no-interest loan and affordable monthly payments.
