KAYSVILLE — A year ago there was no such team as the Utah Attitude.

Now this 12U team has taken the state championship in fast pitch softball after a dramatic two-game finale.

“This was an exciting tournament,” said coach Scott Andersen. “It was a lot of softball from early in the morning until late in the evening and it was 100 degrees so it was really about endurance.”

The Attitude finished third in its four-team pool play and in the bracket play the girls from Davis County went unblemished including a 5-4 extra innings win over their rival Detonation, a team from Tooele.

After working into the finals one win would clinch the championship but the Detonation, which had worked through the one-loss bracket came in and ambushed the Attitude in the first game pounding out a 13-0 win.

That loss meant a one-game winner-take-all championship game 30 minutes after the loss.

“We started pulling some of the starters when that loss got out of hand because we knew we had another shot at this team and we wanted to rest some of the girls and get them ready for that,” Andersen said. “During the half hour break I just told the girls we had beaten this team before and what had just happened was behind us and it was time to focus on the future.

“I felt confident going into that last game.”

And behind solid pitching by Hanalee Robinson the Attitude showed some attitude and shut down the Detonation, 2-0 to become state champions.

“Hanalee pitched an amazing game,” Andersen said. “She did great coming back and facing the same hitters who had just gotten to her and shutting them down a half hour later.”

Lexi Andersen was behind the plate for each of the games, but according to the coach this title was a total team effort.

“Every girl on this team was an important part of us becoming state champions,” Andersen said. “I am so proud of these girls.”

In addition to the state title, the Attitude also won the Timp Classic and May Madness tournaments in Utah County earlier in the year.

“We finished in the top three in all but one tournament this year,” Andersen said. “The hard work, the time together away from softball building team rapport all worked for these girls.

“What a great year.”
