FARMINGTON — Public comment is invited about the current Great Salt Lake planning effort, with a meeting set for Aug. 17 at 10 a.m. with the Davis County Commission.

It will be held in Room 236 of the Memorial Courthouse, 28 E. State Street. Following a presentation there about the plan and some updates being made to it, officials will be available to meet with those interested in more information, says Laura Vernon with SWCA Environmental Consultants.

The Utah Department of Natural Resources has initiated a revision of the Great Salt Lake Comprehensive Management Plan. It is intended to provide management direction to the Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, for protection and use of lake resources for the next decade.

The plan will incorporate much new scientific data that has been developed since the current plan was adopted in 2000, information from DNR says.

A variety of management scenarios will be considered for the lake, including environmental, social and economic aspects. Analysis of new data during the planning process may also influence revisions to FFSL’s Mineral Leasing Plan.

Once management issues have been identified, FFSL will develop a range of management actions to meet the needs of the particular resource.

A draft CMP will be developed that contains strategies to implement preferred alternatives.

All of this, however, will take awhile. The draft CMP will be available for public comment in the spring of 2011. The final CMP and decision document is due to be completed by February 2012.

For more information about the project or to be added to a mailing list for any news and updates, contact Laura Vernon at 257 E. 200 South, Suite 200, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111, call 801-322-4307 or email lvernon@swca.com.

Public comment will be taken through Sept. 30.

The lake is considered an important resource for Davis County by government and business officials, among others.

Gov. Gary Herbert recently held the first Governors Great Salt Lake Commission Advisory Council.

It includes representatives from industry, environmental groups, sewer conservancy districts and many other agencies with direct ties to the lake.
