“We invite everyone to take the first step to better health and participate,” says Davis County Health Director Lewis Garrett.
“There are many benefits to walking. Research shows a 30 to 40 percent reduction in the risk of heart disease and 50 percent reduction in the risk for premature death,” he said.
The walk is part of the health department’s wellness program which encourages residents of all ages to become more physically active.
The event was started some years ago as a way for senior citizens to stay active.
“Walking is a great physical activity to maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk for chronic disease including cancer, heart disease and diabetes,” said Sally Kershisnik, director of the Family Health and Senior Services Division of the health department.
“Whether people join us on Aug. 21 to walk or on this easy and flat five kilometer course, they’ll have a good time doing something that is fun and healthy for them,” she said.
Registration on walk/race day costs $20 and will be offered from 6:30 a.m. until 7:15 a.m. at the Legacy Events Center (formerly called FairPark).
Participation is free to those aged 60 and above. Participants will receive a T-shirt and refreshments will be available at the finish line.
The 5K event has overall and senior categories for males and females. Top finishers in each category will receive cash prizes. Drawings for other prizes will be held to include everyone participating in the 5K, organizer Jessica Hardcastle said.
A free Kids Fun Race will start at 8:30 a.m. All youngsters who complete the half-mile, specially-marked, non-competitive course around the Davis County Fair area will receive a participation medal.
Pre-registration is required. For more information, call 801-451-3377.
