Week one of high school football is in the books and with a split on the local teams, some lessons have been learned.

In Davis’ 35-0 pounding of Brighton, avenging last year’s season opener upset by the Bengals, the Darts proved many things to high school football fans.

First, in spite of taking a big hit from graduation, Davis is in no way a team to ignore.

With three-year starter Gavin Fowler chucking the ball for three scores and nearly 200 yards with no picks and nine different Darts piling up 211 yards on the ground the offense may be better this year than 2009.

Add in a defense that smothered Brighton and it spells sleepless nights for opposing coaches.

Woods Cross showed that they have an offense that can move the ball in a number of ways. With Tyler Parson in his third year of leading the troops the Cats offense can go by air and definitely on the ground with man-child Anthony Kendrick beating up defenders this will be a difficult team to stop.

The Wildcat defense also impressed as a hoard of Cats mauled Roy led by David Mamata’s eight tackles.

In Bountiful’s loss we learned the Braves have a tough defense. Holding big, powerful Lone Peak to just 10 points may not happen again until perhaps the state playoffs.

Add the usual running attack combined with the arm of Cam Zollinger and the ability of Dillon Salazar to make the big play and things could be very nice for the boys on the hill.

At the risk of jumping the gun, what was displayed by Bountiful and Woods Cross Friday night adds to the already intriguing showdown. Mark down Sept. 17 on the calendar as this matchup in Woods Cross should be a classic. Let the hype begin now.

Viewmont showed us that the Vikings have bought into Coach Brad Lloyd’s system and approach as he builds on the experience of playing the 5th ranked team in America.

The Vikings showed potential with quarterbacks Jake Gibbs and Josh Staples. Having survived the Miners, Viewmont will prepare for its Region 1 opener hosting Weber.

We also learned from around Region 1 and Region 6 that Layton is back after coasting past an improved Bonneville team, 28-7.
