WOODS CROSS — Reaching people is easier when the message is fun to sing along with.

Playwright Larrry Forkner and company are hoping to hit the perfect balance between entertainment and inspiration with “Erin’s Promise,” the new LDS musical that will be coming to Woods Cross High School Sept. 11 and 13 at 7 p.m.

“It’s been very gratifying so far,” said Forkner of their current state tour, which will wrap up in Woods Cross. “Everywhere we’ve gone, we’ve been getting larger audiences.”

The musical follows two friends in the pre-mortal world, Angela and Erin, who are scheduled to be born into different time periods. Angela, who is born during pioneer times, makes Erin promise to do her temple work if she never gets the chance to hear the gospel. True to her fear, Angela dies before she has the chance to be baptized.

When Erin is born in modern times, she knows nothing about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is dating a boy who’s nothing but trouble. Will she find the Church and fulfill her promise to her friend?

Forkner was first inspired to write the musical when he was a seminary teacher years ago and showed his students “Saturday’s Warrior.”

“I was struck by the impression it left on the students, especially those who weren’t too excited about other parts of the curriculum,” he said. “It kind of stuck with me.”

For the current run, Forkner worked with Mike Bishop to polish the songs that highlight many of the musical’s pivotal moments.

“In ‘Lost Child,’ Angela is singing as she watches Erin go through the temple,” Forkner said. “It’s a beautiful moment and a beautiful song.”
