That was the case Friday night with the Braves, as Kyle Pawlowski had three interceptions on defense and pounded the Leopard running game to the ground in a 21-0 shutout.
The win now puts the Braves in first place in Region 6 with just three games to go in the regular season.
The Braves offense unit was quick to score in its first possession as quarterback Cam Zollinger rolled to his left to find Matt Parrish, who turned around and fought his way through a couple of East defenders.
When he finally broke through, he scampered in for a 74-yard touchdown to give the Braves the lead for good.
The defense, as is always the case for Bountiful, held the Leopards’ option running attack in check.
Both East High possessions in the first quarter ended with turnovers — once on an incompletion on fourth down, and another when Teau Satuala sacked the quarterback on fourth down — keeping the Leopards out of the endzone.
East had no luck against the Braves’ defense in the second quarter either. On their first possession in the second quarter the Leopards were able to drive into Brave territory but were forced to punt.
Their second possession was a quick one. On the second play after a penalty, Leopard quarterback Tanner Curtis was intercepted by Pawlowski.
However, the Braves were unable to capitalize when they fumbled on the eight-yard line with four minutes remaining in the half.
Before Pawlowski’s turnover, the Braves extended their lead to 14 points when Tyler Hayes found Tyler Poppe on a slant route for a 55-yard catch-and-run.
The drive, which started after East punted, lasted just three plays.
The Braves took that lead into the locker rooms for the half.
The two teams played field position for all of the third quarter, but it was Bountiful which physically won the battle.
Pawlowski picked off his third interception of the game that quarter on East’s first play, following a punt from the Braves.
The Braves turned that interception into points when they began a drive that spilled into the fourth quarter. Instrumental in that drive was running back David Coffman, who turned a first down loss of yardage into a second down 23-yard gain for the Braves.
After a penalty by the Leopards put them at their own 15-yard line, Coffman powered his way through on third down for a 19-yard touchdown. This gave the Braves a 21-point lead with 10 minutes to go in the game.
East’s next possession resulted in a three-and-out thanks to a second down sack by T.J. Maka and a third down pass that was broken up by Matt Parrish.
East also had another three-and-out possession minutes later that resulted in Curtis throwing his fourth interception of the game, that time to Luke Larsen. This sealed the deal and the victory for the Braves.
Coffman ended the night for the Braves with 123 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown.
Poppe finished with two catches for 65 yards and his lone touchdown from Hayes, who had 67 yards through the air with the one touchdown pass.
Zollinger finished with 96 yards and one touchdown.
Bountiful is still undefeated in Region 6 play with three games left on their schedule, two of them at home.
They will take on the Highland Rams, who lost to Olympus and fell to 2-1 in the region.
