Martha “Bernece” Brough Hunter was born in Bountiful, on October 30, 1933 and passed away unexpectedly on July 4, 2014 four months before her 81st birthday. Bernece entered this world in the home her father built on 1st North in Bountiful. Bernece was the second to the youngest of 10 children born to Horace Brough and Martha Lufkin Phippen Brough. Bernece grew up traveling with her family and visiting her many siblings. Bernece enjoyed learning and after graduating High School with Honors in 1951 and went on to attend Brigham Young University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Archeology in 1955. Bernece continued to pursue her education and received a second bachelor’s degree in 1956 from the University of Utah in Elementary Education.
Bernece had an unfailing testimony of the Gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Due to her unfailing faith in the church and her desire to serve in 1957 Bernece was called to the Minnesota Mission where she served until 1958. Bernece was set apart for her mission by one of the apostle’s, an experience that she always treasured. In 1958 she returned home to help care for her ailing father and worked nights to help her mother care for him during the day. Bernece always spoke of those times as the greatest blessing.
In 1964 Bernece met John Allen Hunter and after John had asked her father for her hand in marriage and receiving his blessing they set up plans for a September wedding. Bernece’s father passed away in August, 3 weeks before her wedding. Bernece often said that while her father didn’t walk her down the aisle or give her away that she felt his presence there that day. John and Bernece were married in her family home and sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on September 3, 1964. Five years later In February of 1969 John and Bernece welcomed son Robert John into their family with their daughter Ann Martha following five years later in November of 1973. Bernece’s greatest joy was her children and her family. After her children started school Bernece put her degree in elementary education to good use teaching for many years at Realms of Inquiry.
Bernece spent her life in the service of others and was often heard quoting that “service to others was service to self and to God.” Bernece was kind, gentle and compassionate with a beautiful spirit that touched the lives of many and will be missed by all.
Bernece spent the last years of her life surrounded by her children and grandchildren who continued to relish in her teachings and her love.
